In Renovation Heaven with Home Magazine

29/12/2016 by kimberley Leave a Comment

These past holidays when my family and I escaped to a little farm outside Bredasdorp, my hubby surprising bought – for himself – the new Home Magazine – Renovations 2016 Edition. Suffice to say that my mom and I simply devoured it during baby sleep breaks and toddler nap times and it has got me so inspired to start on some of our big ticket planning for 2017.

The Home Magazine has always been a favourite of mine; if I’ve not subscribed in the past year, then I make it a point to buy it as soon as it comes out. While I enjoy the gardening and craft DIY sections, my favourites are the renovation articles, so this purely Renovations Edition really made my day. I found this quote about ‘Home’- “the spot of earth supremely blest, a dearer, sweeter spot than all the rest”, which really reminded me that while we renovate our houses during a season or time period, the growth of our homes in our lives and in our hearts is always continuing.

This article on ‘The perfect family units’, featured an amazing loft conversion with exposed beams and a really texured feel. I loved the raw concrete and wood, brickwork, and aluminium sections – a real rustic trendiness! Many of the rooms were finished in Cretecote from Cemcrete which I really liked. We’re planning on renovating our garage into a flatlet at some point, so I was taking some good inspiration from this article!

This family brought in durable wooden worktops into their kitchen redesign, and paired with modern white cabinetry, green accents and lots of fresh greenery, it’s a delight. It’s also a clever combination of sleek Scandi style (see my Scandinavian Home-Style post for more ideas) with contrasting down-to-earth wood finishes.

And… back to our flatlet inspiration we go! This couple redid an adjoining apartment to their own house by adding a loft level, and used recycled materials like wooden pallets, school chalkboard and crates, together with quirky decor and fresh coats of paint to make it really stand out. AND it cost them only R11 000! Peanuts, as they say.
